Is There Surety of Payment after Being Hired in oDesk?

by Francis
(April 30, 2013)

Yes, there is surety of payment if you managed to get hired in oDesk. On the other hand, this surety of payment only applies if you actually do the work you’re supposed to do. In other words, you cannot abuse the system or goof off and be paid for it. But as long as you do work on the project you’re supposed to work on, you will get paid for your time.

In which cases will you not get paid?

If for example you are surfing on Facebook while you are logged in and getting money from your employer, this would probably not work out well.

How the System Works To Make Sure Payment Is Given For Your Work

oDesk uses its own screen recording software in the so-called oDesk Team Application. This software will record, as long as you login into your project at a random point in time every 10 minutes, a screenshot from your computer.

As long as those screenshots show that you are working on your project, you will get paid for that.

For example, if you are hired to research and record a report about a certain subject; then, your screenshots will show all sorts of Google research results relevant to the topic. Perhaps, a Word file opened while you copy and paste the relevant information; perhaps, an Excel sheet or something to that nature. All those screenshots proves that you are working on the project.

If a screenshot shows you playing an online game, for example, then the employer has the right to deny you the payment for that chunk of time. Since each screenshot is recorded every 10 minutes, you would lose – and only if your employer points that out – that 10 minutes chunk of time. For the remaining 50 minutes, you would get paid.

Word of Warning – Your Work Quality and Your Reputation Are Of Crucial Importance

As you are working on your projects, you must try to stay as focused as you can. If you feel you are going to procrastinate, log off from your team. Do what you need to do then log back in and work.

The possibility to lose 10 minutes of time paid work is the lesser problem you might have if you don’t work when you’re supposed to work. Your employer could end the contract with you. At that time, he is freed from the guarantee that he needs to pay you for your work. This can happen. Of course, an employer would likely contact you but he’s not required to.

So the best way to guarantee that you are paid is to do what you are actually supposed to do. As long as you do that, oDesk protects you, your work and your payment and guarantees it.

As an employer, if I were to protest against rightfully done work for my virtual assistant; my virtual assistant would be right and he would keep his payment. So, there’s no possibility for an employer to deny you your payment. Actually, it gets retracted from the credit card of the employer automatically.

The Skillfulness of Your Work Is Not Of Relevance for the Payment Guarantee

As I said, the payment is not dependent on the skill of your work, only if you do the work. If you work slowly or if you work inefficiently, you will still get paid. But only, of course, for how long the employer will put up with that.

If at some point in time he will fire you because you work too slowly or too inefficiently, after that you would not be able to earn anymore from this contract. But all the work you have done until to that point, you will be guaranteed your payment.

On the other hand, you should have worry about your work feedback. If you do bad work and your contract gets cancelled, you will get the payment for the work you have done. But you can also risk getting a bad feedback. If you have a bad feedback, future employer will possibly not hire you.

You shouldn’t worry about being ripped off. oDesk is a very big respectable service. Thousands or tens of thousands of virtual assistants and employers are using it. oDesk has an interest in protecting both sides of the contract since they earn on every dollar paid to you by adding an additional fee to the employer.

So, this service protects and guarantees your payment. The more important problem you must solve is to be successful in getting hired.

Bottom-Line

Your payment is guaranteed as long as you work on the job you’re supposed to do.

Focus on worrying about the quality of your work and your online reputation in order to get more and more jobs and also better paid jobs.

And finally, if you ever encounter any problem with payments from oDesk, be sure to come back here and report it in the comments. I’ll try to help you out with advice or any other way I can.

Also, if you enjoyed this article, be sure to leave a comment too. I will love to hear from you.

by: JomvieI am not familiar with how oDesk works, but in my opinion, if you wanted to work online you must be prepared in the nature of the job and discipline yourself from logging in to social media platforms. This will not only help you from being distracted, but keeps your focus to your tasks as well and later in the end a good outcome and a nice feedback from your employer..

Online workers should have all these kind of qualities..

Financial Outsourcing Risks

by Francis
(March 19, 2013)

The biggest financial outsourcing risk is when you lose your virtual assistant. If for whatever reason your VA leaves you, you will lose money in one way or another.

Let me explain.

If you hire a VA and a few days later the working relationship does not work out, you lose money.

Why?

Hiring the right way takes time. Time is money.

You could have done something else with your business in that time.

So, it makes sense to invest time into hiring one right person. Then keep that person, hopefully, for a long term.

If you have worked together with a virtual or personal assistant for many years and the cooperation has been great and then for some reason your virtual assistant leaves you, you also lose money.

Why?

You invested time and money to train your virtual assistant.

Some of his paid work time has been for training purposes exclusively. When the virtual assistant leaves you, you risk losing the money you invested into his training.

How to Prevent These Financial Outsourcing Risks

In the first case, do your best to establish a good working relationship.

One of the most important tactics to do that is to have good business ethics. This will make sure both sides of the cooperation are happy and will keep the relationship going.

In the second case, sometimes you cannot avoid that a virtual assistant leaves you.

For example, his life situation might have changed. He might have found a completely new job direction and that is not your fault.

Or, after some time, the communication has deteriorated.
That is within your power to keep in track.

However, to minimize financial losses from training in one virtual assistant, it makes sense to keep notes of how and what your virtual assistant has learned to work with you.

When you hire the next assistant, you will know on which skills to focus on.

Even better, ask your virtual assistant to write down the lessons he has learned as he learns them.

Even if this takes time. This will build a manual for you as well as for any potential, additional or replacing virtual assistant.

You have to be aware that the time invested in to your virtual assistant’s training is priceless.

Aug 27, 2014 if it’s not meant to be..
by: John

And there are employers who don’t mind firing VA’s… I think it depends on the personality as well and how the employer will handle the things between him/her and the VA.

If things are not working between you and the VA, no matter how hard it would be for you, you just have to let that person go.

Aug 30, 2014 OK if there is a total personality mismatch
by: Francis

I can only agree if there is an extremely low compatibility between employer and VA.

I most cases though, this can be worked out with God communication skills. And that is the kind of effort both sides often fail to invest.

On the employer’s end, it’s because choosing from a pool of applicants seems faster. It can be, but many underestimate how much time the screening process can take.

On the Va’s side, I believe it’s mostly the need for the work and the money that drives them to try something else than to fight for what they got.

In total, investing in making it work can be beneficial to both sides. More than most people would expect.

How Your Virtual Assistant Can Help You Set up Your Facebook Page Background

by Francis
(March 18, 2013)

editing photos in Photoshop

Sometime ago, Ideal-helper’s Facebook Fan Page did not have any background picture. To be honest, it looked quite plain.

I noted that fact to my virtual assistant. Here is what he did;

First, he researched a useful picture. Then, he used Photoshop to manually delete the background of the stock photo. Note that I do not have Photoshop myself and I do not know how to use this program.

This is a classical example of how the skill of a virtual assistant helps me out almost without me noticing. Perhaps, I wouldn’t even have noticed it if I wouldn’t follow regularly the work of my VA using Odesk team application.

After this, he placed a background similar to the background color of my website behind the stock photo. He even used a blur effect using Photoshop. Don’t ask me how. He just did it.
Ideal Helper Facebook Coverpage
Then, he cropped the illustrations to the exact sizes needed so that the Facebook banner image looks optimally.

Check out the great infographic we used to get the information about the banner dimensions on Facebook pages on our Pinterest page.

He then even prepared a folder containing only the files I had to upload. First, the logo picture with correct dimensions; and second, the Facebook banner picture which was optimized and which even had a slogan.

He also prepared an overview of a preview screenshot of how my Facebook page would look like if I uploaded the files.

What more could I ask of my virtual assistant for this project? Not much. That’s for sure.

How to View Other Team Member’s Work Diary in oDesk Team Room

by Virtual Assistant
(March 14, 2013)

Although in the past it was possible to access your teammate’s work diaries, now this provision is limited to only those who have admin access of the team.

odesk admin privileges interface

In my personal opinion, it is a really good move by oDesk support to block the access for everyone else. I am sure it would have caused some privacy and disclosure issues.

Especially when you have a private discussions with your clients or another team member, or providing someone some confidential login details of their payment account, when in the meantime the Team Room captures the screen and add the same screenshot to your work diary, the screenshot is almost public to everyone.

However, as I mentioned earlier, it is possible to view screenshots of your teammates’ work diaries when you have the admin access of a particular team.

For All Employers: If you want to upgrade a team-member’s role by giving him/her the administrative permissions, please go to this helpful post.

“I Have Admin Access – How to View Other’s Screenshots?”

Comments for How to View Other Team Member’s Work Diary in oDesk Team Room

Mar 14, 2013 Great ‘How To’ instructions on Viewing Each Other’s Work Diary in oDesk
by: AnonymousI’d like to say thank to my virtual assistant. This research was really eye opening especially the screenshots. Even as an employer I’ve learned something.Sometimes as an employer, you overlook privacy questions like these if you get too used to using the oDesk Team Room application.

On the other hand, just for this functionality you should not make all your virtual assistants administrators. Because if you make them administrators, they will have access to few functions that can be misused.

My own virtual assistant does have these administrative rights, but that’s because he has earned my trust. For a beginner, you should keep the settings as they are.

With regards to the question about seeing login information or any other critical secret data, here is my take on this.

If you want one solution to effectively save your passwords as a virtual assistant or as an employer, then use LastPass.

Thinking About Buying Stock Photos from Fiverr? Better Think Again

by Francis
(07 March, 2013)

selecting-pictures-for-photo-slideshowIt is not a good idea to buy stock photos from Fiverr or similar services.

Why?

You won’t get the copyright information with it. In other words, you will purchase pirated stock photos and paying money for it.

What’s the worst thing that can happen?

Well, a stock photo bank can catch you using those photos and then it’s going to get really expensive. Legal fees and legal battles are not known to be easy and easily paid.

So do yourself a favor and stay away from services like Fiverr if you are looking for stock photos. I’ve made the same mistake but luckily my only damage has been to pay $5.

Prioritizing Your Work for Your Virtual Assistant If There Is Too Much To Do

by Francis
(11 March, 2013)

Sometimes, I would have so many ideas I would like to hire ten virtual assistants and get them all done. But before I do this, I need to stop myself and think.

No one can start out and have enough work to do and manpower to supervise ten virtual assistants. So, I keep the numbers of co-workers on my team low. At the moment, there’s my main virtual assistant and my transcriptionist.

For times like these where I have several projects running, I simply prioritize the tasks and let my virtual assistant know which tasks to attack right away and which tasks later when there’s more time.

Step 5: Your virtual assistant creates a post out of the transcript and embed the video that inspired your blog post.

Step 6: Feel free to contact the video owner that you have made a post based on his video. He might promote this on his own social networks and you gain double.

Good Tool for Video Instructions but It Is A Little Slow

by Francis
(13 March, 2013)

sharing-only-selected-part-of-screenI swear by using Jing as a screen instruction tool almost every day. One little thing is bothering me with it, though.

It takes an awful lot of time to start up when you don’t have it run in the background. And when it does run in the background, it takes a quite considerable amount of computer resources.

Do you have the same experience than I have?

I’m always on the lookout for better programs to make managing my assistants easier. Actually, my VA has researched a big list of transcription programs for me. I’ll feature them in a future post.

For now, Jing still is the most efficient tool for a screen recording in my opinion. Just the start up time is bothering me a little bit.

I Wish I Could Outsource My Day Job

by Francis
(March 04, 2013)

Do you sometimes have these moments where in your actual day job, you receive so much work that you wish you could give it to a virtual assistant?

Since I’m working with one on an almost day to day basis, this thought has crossed my mind more than once. How easy would it be for me to send him some data from my work, let him work on it for me and then save lots of boring time. Especially, if it involves working with huge excel files and data analysis.

Unfortunately, this is not something I would recommend or do for that matter.

Reasons why you should never outsource your day job chores to your VA:

  1. It can get you fired. How is that for a reason?
  2. It’s not safe. If your VA makes a mistake even without meaning bad, it’s you who are responsible for your day work results.
  3. You will get caught! Sooner or later. Retributions can come even much in the future.

The only time when you can safely outsource your own day job is when you are a self-employed entrepreneur. Then, you are only responsible to yourself. This is more than a reason to strongly consider becoming your own boss.

How do you feel about outsourcing your real job?

Is it fair…? Is it cool? Should it be allowed?
