Transcription Service Cost Comparison

Clock inside magnifying glass near money on paper background with chartTranscription service cost comparison is part-2 of an interview from Stefan from Germany, who lives the Four Hour Work Week lifestyle in Thailand.

Click here to read part 1 – Human vs voice transcription software

Summary:

  • Voice transcription software is a single time investment whereas a human transcriptionist will charge you as and when he/she works for you.
  • It can take 4-5 hours to transcribe one hour of audio recording.
  • It’s important that you speak clearly with an easy to understand accent so that your transcriptionist understands it easily.

Start of the Interview:

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

How much does it costs you to transcribe like let’s say one hour of talking?

Francis
Francis:

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. Let me estimate. So, transcription takes roughly 2-4 times as long as you speak. This depends on how complicated the stuff is that you speak; how fast you speak.

It also depends on if you make many comments or side bars. It depends on if the transcriptionist has experience with this work or not.

But let’s say the worst case scenario, if it takes four times as long as the time you need to record. So if I record 1 hour of recording in the normal speed, it would take 4 hours of work.

Let’s not make it 5 hours, keep it 4 hours. So in this case, I would need to invest between $4 and $8 to pay for the transcription.

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

Okay.

Francis
Francis:

Of course, it’s not always right from the beginning this effective. Any virtual assistant, even a transcriptionist, needs to be accustomed to you.

So for example, I have a sort of a slight German accent. With that, I try to force myself to speak correct English while I talk. So this is some conscious effort I try to make.

I could, of course and you know that, make my German accent worse and then it wouldn’t help to be understandable so much. But I think if you speak decent English, it’s okay.

If you give your assistant some time, the first few hours, to be accustomed to your style and also let him work out which format you want your transcriptions to have then it can be okay.

For example for me, I like my transcription files as a Word format ideally with paragraphs. And the notes which I make I like them in Word comments.

So, perhaps, you would like your transcription results in a Notepad or an Excel sheet.

How to Get Totally Free Stock Photos

If you are running a small online business, or if you want to start an online business, one question will definitely come across your mind many times:

"How to get totally free stock photos?"

Stock photos are essential for any website. You always need them in order to illustrate your pages so that they look more attractive and alluring. Also, pages with beautiful images increase the overall visibility of the page. Using images without permission or infringing on the copyright of images is just like stealing someone’s work and it can get you in legal trouble. Most people wouldn’t agree with this argument, but still this is true that one can sue you if you’re using their images without a copyright license. But the question is, once again, how do you get stock photos?
Francis Francis: My Virtual Assistant illustrates my web pages for me, doing the research and optimizing the pictures. Here he shares his secrets of how he finds the needed free images.

Use CreativeCommons Images

The first and most simple answer is to use CreativeCommons images. Creative Commons have a royalty-free license, which allows you to share and distribute your work with others.

Under this license, you can use an image on your website, but it’s not true for all online images. It’s only applicable to those images which are shared under a CreativeCommons License.

Also, mostly CreativeCommons license demands that you also credit their work by posting a link back to the image. In other means, you cannot use someone’s work without a link back to where the actual image is placed.

Creative commonsBuy Stock Photo Images

Another straight forward method is to buy stock photos. But as I mentioned earlier, if you are a small entrepreneur, it would be hard to buy lots of images when you have just started your business.

The prices of these stock photos usually start from $2 an image and usually you will need to add at least 2-3 images on each page of your website. This money can add up fast!

So How Can I Get Totally Free Stock Photos?

Well, I have a proven method with which you can download and use stock photos totally for free. And the best part is that you can use them legally.

Here I will let you know how I do it, step by step, to get free stock photos.

  1. A lot of stock photo agencies offer free sign up promotions, vouchers and coupon codes that allow you to download a set of particular images for free.
  2. You can search Google for these promotion/coupon codes
  3. Here are some terms that I have used in order to get some helpful results:

a) Free stock photo coupon codes

b) Free stock photo credits

c) Stock photo coupons 2014

d) Totally Free stock photos

Google search result for free stock photos

  1. You will find a lot of free stock photo promotions. Obviously, some of them work, some don’t. Sometimes, I find offers that allow me to download 5 images per day up to 7 days (35 images in total)
  2. So, I go ahead and click on that link to check if this is the real deal. Spoiler alert: It is 🙂
  3. This specific example is offering two different promotion codes. One is offering 3 free credits whereas the other offers 5 free credits.

Free stock images coupon codes

  1. I am feeling a little optimistic today, so I will go ahead and click to 5 credits offer.
  2. They ask me to sign up for the service in order to get free credits. And that is what I am going to do.

Signing up to the service in order to get free stock images

  1. Well, where do I find my promotional code that they are asking for…? Let’s go back to the page where I have found the offer… May be I’ll get it from there.
  2. Here it is, I found it. Will it work…? Finger’s crossed. So, I will go ahead and fill out the form to sign up.
free stock photo voucher code
  1. Hurray, It worked well for me. I found 3 free credits. I was looking for 5 credits, but still 3 are also good.

Here is the proof that I actually got 3 free photo credits

Getting Free Stock Photos Works With Promotions – How to Get More

Now that you know how you can get totally free stock photos, there are a lot more search results that also offer free photos/credits.

Just check out more websites and get as many free credits as you can!

Websites Where You can Get Multiple Stock Photo Promotions

Apart from the method mentioned above, there are also some great websites that offers free multiple stock photo offers. I have bookmarked some of them and look into them whenever I need free stock photos.

Tips On Job Hunting

Accelerate Your Success – A How To

I was searching for a job for over half a year. Here are my best tips on job hunting for you. I only found out about the best and most effective job search tactics at the end of my job hunt.

Tips for your first job hunting

tie and suit dressed up for successIf you are just starting out and have recently graduated from college, looking for a job will be a challenge.

Chances are that you did not start applying for a job while still in college.

Even if this is good advice, your final exams were even more important to you at that time.

No problem. Tackle one challenge at a time.

Your First Job Hunting – The Most Important Tips

  1. Use your connections: ask friends, family, teachers and professors for help!
  2. Dress for success: get 1-2 good fitting sets of business clothes for your applications.
  3. Find job fairs: it was the number one place to get good job opportunities. Talking to people face to face goes a long way!

Just know that your first job search might take a bit longer.

It’s probably a good idea to take a part time job while you do your first job searches.

Also, try to get as many

  • testimonials,
  • job references
  • and advanced training

that you possibly can!

Why it makes sense to dress up in advance

Dressing up for success takes not only quite a bit of money, but also time. Shopping for suits, finding the right fit, and possibly adjusting the suits at a tailor takes a few days.

Time that you don’t have a day before your job interview, believe me.

You don’t want to be stressed out over a “minor detail” like your clothes at a crucial time!

Take the time to shop before right when you send out your very first application. You’ll be suited up by the time you get your first job invitation.

Why personal contact beats everything else you have ever tried

Address book in blue color

It has happened to me before:

  1. I send an online application with all my credentials, they decline politely and tell me they have no use for my profile
  2. When I get to know HR employees at a job fair and apply after that, they invite me. And they invite me with enthusiasm.

That’s why you should never, ever underestimate the power of personal contact. Even if – or precisely because – it is much harder to talk to a human being than to send a generic job application:

You will increase your chances of getting the job – a lot.

Establishing personal contact is one of the best tips on job hunting I can share.

Why you should never stop

What if you have your dream job, are happy and don’t want things to change, ever?

Well, life is changing around you. And if you don’t keep up, you’ll fall behind.

That’s why I’ll finish my tips on job hunting with this one: you must keep your options open.

If you have set up email alerts for job research websites

  • keep receiving them
  • use email filtering functions to mark them as read
  • and move them in subfolders, in case you ever need them again

Keep building new contacts even if you are working. Who knows, perhaps you’ll secure your dream job of tomorrow?

Don’t try to search until you find your dream job – at first

Please take this tip the right way: a first job, some work experience and most importantly, some money are more important than starting out with your dream job right away.

If you have the possibility to work, do it. You are free to look for other opportunities after a year or two. Actually, your first job won’t be your last, in all probability.

Since you will change your position anyways, why not start out with this first job offer to make some “cash and XP”.

By the way, you make the best connections while working on the job!

Legally Using The Mechanical Turk Outside Of The Us

I will show you a quick workaround on how you can use the Mechanical Turk outside of the US as a buyer/employer and still get an account.
india-flagThis workaround  does not work for workers, for example from India(if you are a worker from outside of the USA and want learn an alternative, click here).
The Mechanical Turk is a useful micro task service which is cheap and has many advantages. Unfortunately their terms and conditions make it difficult for users who live outside of the US to use their services.

When there's a will, there's a way! This workaround is only for employers who want to crowd-source their work to Mechanical Turk

The workaround is based on a very simple trick

Their terms of service insist on you having a valid address in the USA to participate in their program, but you don’t have to actually live there.

How to Get a Valid US Address for Registration

Like the Video? Please Subscribe to Our Video Channel

  • On the other hand, there are services out there which can give you a free and valid US address.
  • If you have that virtual US address, from a parcel forwarding service for example, you can then simply login into amazon’s website using an existing amazon account.

Step by Step workaround to use the Mechanical Turk as a buyer outside of the USA

Impossible only means that you haven't found a solution yet

  1. If you are not yet shopping on amazon, get one account for free.
  2. When they ask for your address, use this US address you just received from a virtual parcel forwarding service.
  3. When they ask for your credit card information, use your real credit card information and real address where you actually live.

It will work out without any problem.

The billing address for payments of Mechanical Turk services needs to work of course, but it is only related to your credit card information.

Your residence address where you put the virtual US address you just obtained is the base of the trick to get a working account to use the Mechanical Turk outside of the US.

Getting a free Virtual Adress from IPSparcel – Step by Step

Here is a method I have used successfully. It doesn’t cost a penny.

I asked my Virtual Assistant to lay out each step in detail, making sure this workaround really works.

  • Sign up with Ipsparcel.

This service really works. You just need to fill out a short registration form by using your personal details:

International Parcel Services Registration Form

  • You will have to fill in your own information here, of course.

After submitting your personal details you will get an email with a confirmation link:

Ips Email confirmation

  • After clicking the confirmation link, you will be lead to their confirmation page where you will find your shipping address in the United States.

Ips address confirmation notificatio

  • Go back to Mechanical Turk and complete the registration form with the US address you just received from ipsparcel.com

Mechanical Turk Registration Form

After this you are able to login as an employer to Mechanical Turk even if you live outside the US.

Four Alternative Workaround Methods to get a virtual address in the US

If for any reason the method above does not work any more, you can use these alternatives if you need to use the Mechanical Turk outside of the US to outsource micro-tasks.

1. Usa2me

USA2me is another similar service where you can get a personal US residential address. However, the service is not free and has a lot of different packages and plans for every country independently.

USA2me subscription plans

2. MyUS

Another service for getting a virtual adress is MyUS.com.

Under the standard subscription there is no subscription fee, but you will need to pay $10 (one time) as a signup fee.

3. USAbox

Signup for free to USAbox.com. To verify it, you need to pay 5$ though.

Just fill in a short form and you will be provided with a physical residential address within the United States

USAbox address confirmation Email

4. Borderlinx

The last alternative I know of and my VA looked into for me is Borderlinx.

At Borderlinx, you simultaneously get two physical addresses from the US and the UK.

Newly generated addresses

These instructions should help you get into the mechanical turk, even if you live in the EU or anywhere else in the world. Have fun micro-crowdsourcing!

How To Successfully Outsource Your Craigslist Phone Verification

[contentblock id=5]Using Craigslist to generate traffic can be very effective, if you have the right audience for it. Because I’m based in Germany, I needed a workaround for a craigslist phone verification to be able to post to the US.

OVERVIEW

  • What worked
  • Step by Step instructions
  • Asking a friend in the US to verify for you
  • Outsourcing the verification to oDesk
  • Seriously – use Fiverr for this

What Worked: Getting a Phone Verified Using Fiverr

On Fiverr, you can easily research services that do Craigslist posting and account verification for the US for you.

Here is the service I have used.

Fiverr Gig for getting a phone verified account

Pros:

  • Hassle free (I got my account verified in under one hour)
  • Minimal cost (5$ is less than it cost me to have my VA looking for solutions for this challenge)

Cons:

  • None. You have to make a free account for Fiverr.
  • The whole project cost me a whopping 5$ and about 10 minutes of my time. Not really that big of a “con”.

Investing 5$ for a Craigslist Phone Verification – Step by Step

Cough up the 5$ (pay via credit card or Paypal). You automatically receive a notification with what further info is needed from you. In this case, my login info.

Fiver Craigslist gig discussion with the worker

Note: by the Terms of Service on Fiverr, you’re not allowed to share your email address.

It’s recommended to write “(at)” instead of “@” and “ema1l” instead of “email”.

This lowers the risk of your Fiverr account being banned. Just like the service provided did in his answer (see below).

Providing craigslist login details to the provider

Note that I gave this unknown person access to my Craigslist account. This strategy of getting US verification for your Craigslist account is only recommended if you use a new account that does not contain personable or sensible information.

I checked my email five minutes later and copied the Craigslist notification as well as the activation link to the service provider.

The actual work by the Fiverr service went within one hour, and we exchanged a few messages to clarify what was needed. It all went very smoothly.

He even let me play around with the newly phone verified account as long as we both still had access to it.

More discussion with Fiverr Gig provider

When I tried posting to San Francisco, US, the ad went live without any problems.

You Can Also Successfully Verify Your Craigslist for the US Using the Same Method!

Successfully Posted an ad to the US

It took a few weeks of testing out different ideas until I finally cracked the problem with bypassing the Craigslist phone verification step. Naturally, I was pretty happy when it finally worked 🙂

After the gig, I changed my password for my Craigslist account back to another safely generated password using my favorite password management tool, LastPass.

For the sake of completeness, let me tell you about what I have tried out before finding out the method described above.

What I Tried Out First: Asking a Friend in the Us to Set Up the Account for Me

You can always ask a friend in the US to verify a Craigslist account for you.

When my friend set up another Craigslist account from the US, I still had the problem that I needed phone verification for that account.

Further action required to complete the request

[contentblock id=5]
Unfortunately, my friend already had used his phone number for his own account.

When you do this, note that:

You can’t use

  • a toll-free number
  • a prepaid phone card
  • any number from outside of the US.

Third Option: Hiring Someone on oDesk to Post Craigslist Ads to the Us

My VA already had prepared a backup solution if the account verification with Fiverr would not have worked:

He proposed to outsource the process to a freelancer on oDesk. (You can also read about it in his diary posts)

What my VA had to say about posting Craigslist Ads to the US

About the Craigslist task where you asked for my feedback, I think it’s really good that the referral traffic from craigslist is spending much more time on ideal-helper on average.

Keeping in view this performance I strongly recommend that we should increase the quantity of ads.

But as you know around 50% of visitors come from the US and Canada and at the moment we cannot even touch those 50% traffic.

I think first we should sort out a way to post ads to US.

I know it is possible. You can either

  • Purchase phone verified accounts (I don’t recommend this method because sometimes craigslist asks you to re-verify your phone number if they have suspected it).
  • Or hire another person for this task, I did a short research on odesk and found these two profiles (both VAs from Pakistan) who are doing this job for $3.33/hour.

      1. Naeem Afzal

      2. Khurram Bin Khalid

It’s an easy and straightforward job if you have some friend or relative in US. A lot of people have their relatives and friends in the Europe and USA, especially if you talk about India, Pakistan and Philippines.

So I think we should really try this out and hire someone for this particular task. I think one can easily post more than 10 ads/hour and then see the results if it’s worth spending money on this task.

Save Time, and Use the Fiverr Workaround to Verify Your Craigslist Account in The Us

Seriously, my assistant and I went through some trouble finding this solution. We really hope you can save yourself the time and the hassle.

And as soon as you have set yourself up to post to the US, you can publish and refresh your ads as often as you want.

Even Simpler: Get Your Ads Directly Submitted To Craigslist (Even in the Us) As A Service

If you don’t want to post yourself, you can use Fiverr to have your ads submitted to Craigslist (or similar sites) yourself!

Here are some people who provide these gigs (my Virtual Assistant actually researched them):

5 ads on craigslist and 10 on Backpage for $5
5 ads on craigslist and 10 on Backpage for $5

Happy posting to Craigslist!

Cost of Living in Thailand for a Nice Lifestyle by Western Standards

A view from a local market in Thailand

After interviewing Stefan, an entrepreneur from Germany who has moved to Thailand to live on lower cost. I really wanted to find out how his cost of living in Thailand works out.

Topics of the 3-part interview:

  • Currency conversion rates in Thailand
  • Cost of going out/amusement in Thailand
  • Cost of food in Thailand
  • Places to go out in Thailand
  • Thai foods and eating insects in Thailand

Start of the Interview:

Francis
Francis:

Okay, Stefan. Could you tell me how much money in dollars and then in Thai money you roughly have to use each month to live?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

Okay. First of all for basic conversion in head, I use the 40:1 conversion like 40 Baht is 1 Euro or $1. Okay, so it’s very easy to convert it in your head if you see something for 20 Baht, it’s half a dollar or half a euro.

Okay, in your head, it’s not exactly the right price. For euro, it’s right but for dollar it’s a little bit less.

Francis
Francis:

Okay.

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

I have a house with 2 bedrooms and a scooter.

Francis
Francis:

And a pool.

View of swimming pool from Stefan's home in Thailand
Stefan actually living in a house with a big pool. That’s the dream of everyone.
stefan employer interview
Stefan:

Yeah, the house has a pool. And we pay 15,000 a month which is around $375 rounded up $400/400 Euro.

For a 2 bedroom house with a scooter so you can drive around town and whatever you want to do. Plus, on top of that comes all the expenses that you have for food, drinks and whatever you need; all the stuff that you normally buy on a day to day basis.

So I would say, we spend around 30,000-35,000 Baht a month which translates to around 700-900 Euro/Dollar.

Francis
Francis:

With 2 persons?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

2 people, yeah.

Francis
Francis:

Food and everything included?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

Yeah, everything included. I think if we rounded really nicely up to 1000 when it’s with no strings attached like you have no worries.

You can eat whatever you want every day and you can go there and then you’ll come. So if we rounded it generously up to $1,000 that would the monthly expenses you have for 2 people.

Francis
Francis:

How luxurious is your lifestyle there? You have a pool. You can eat out every day?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

Normally in Thailand, it’s like a cultural thing again because it seems to me that everyone is out even the Thai’s. I don’t know exactly how this works but it seems to me like people don’t cook at home.

They always instead of cooking every day two hours at home for breakfast, lunch and dinner; they just have jobs, small jobs than cook.

So the normal people just go out to eat by the food stand. You know, they have instead of restaurants; you have so many food stands everywhere. Every 10 meters you food stands. There’s someone that cooks something and we can take it away or eat it there.

Normally, it seems like everyone eats out here. You don’t have to cook if you don’t want to but you can, of course. So when you are living here as a foreigner, you can eat every day out which costs you the same. It costs you like around $1 or 1 Euro per meal, in average.

Francis
Francis:

When you pay $1 per meal, is the drink included?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

Oh, that’s often even included because water is often free when you eat something somewhere.

But things are very inexpensive there like 25 cents for a bottle of water. And something that’s for us Europeans, you don’t have a fee on bottles – a bottle deposit fee.

Because in Germany, we have this bottle deposit fee which makes it when you buy a drink for 1 Euro and it costs more than 1 Euro or, you know?

Francis
Francis:

Because 25 cents and you have to give the bottle back to get the fee back.

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

Exactly. So since you don’t have it here when a bottle only costs about 20 cents, it’s 20 cents period.

So it’s not doubled like in Germany.

Francis
Francis:

Yes. Let’s say, I come visit you in Thailand and I book a hotel or something similar your living standards.

I don’t rent a house. I book a hotel with your standards – with a pool for 2 people and 2 bedrooms. How much would I have to pay?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

You mean a house? You rent a house?

Francis
Francis:

Yes. The similar living standards but not on long term basis. But just like a vacation of 2 weeks.

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

That wouldn’t be possible, most likely. Because, at least where I live, you can’t rent houses for shorter than at least a year.

Francis
Francis:

That’s sad. Why?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

You can rent and go to hotels, basically which is not a house. It’s only a room with bathroom and everything.

Francis
Francis:

Yes. How expensive are hotels?

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

They’re not really expensive. I mean before we settle down when we found a house, we were living in a hotel for a month and we paid like 15 Euros or $15 a day. So for 30 days for a 2-bed hotel room would come up also around $450 a month.

Francis
Francis:

Yes, seems affordable.

stefan employer interview
Stefan:

It’s very affordable. It’s comparative to what we are paying right now for a house.
