Fiverr Case Study: Buying Eighty and More Stock Photos for $5. Are They Really Royalty Free Images?

by Francis
(July 02, 2012)

Here is another micro task I outsourced to Fiverr end of last year. For another website of mine, I have used Creative Common pictures from Flickr which didn’t cost anything. I was looking for higher quality stock photos, only to see they are pretty expensive. Then I stumbled on this Fiverr task:

A guy called “100K” made this Gig:

“Will provide you 80+ royalty free images on a topic of your choice for $5!”

I investigated. I wrote back and forth with him and then I just bought the Gig.

It goes pretty fast spending five dollars on Fiverr because you can literally buy a Gig with one click.

Anyways, after I explained to him what the pictures should be showing, I indeed got a very nice archived download with more than 80 high quality stock photos. They were not branded in any way, high quality and high resolution.

Then I got stuck: I did not know where the pictures came from and if would get into trouble using them.

I decided to ask the “100 K” guy if he knew about the copyright details to use the stock photos.

That’s where he was not much of a help. Here is what he said:

“Yes. You can use these pictures at anywhere you want without any license. As you know I provide pictures to my customers without any kinds of rights. It’s 100% legal.

As you have already heard downloading is not a crime if it’s used for people’s right. That’s what I do.”

What? Yes or No?!

This is gibberish!

And also it is nonsense.

I realized that I had bought material which I could not use legally.

Bottom line:

This Gig really sounded great. Like a great deal. People left awesome feedback for him and everything looked fine. Only that you couldn’t use the results without fear of someone filing a complaint against you.

Is there any method I can use these pictures anyways?

This is one the question I asked to my virtual assistant.

Here is what he thinks about it:

“I have noticed that many of the employers on oDesk posted jobs in which they demanded to research photos from different online resources including Flickr and Google search and sometimes they do not care about the license information. The only concern they have is that the picture should not have any text or watermark.

So if you asked me personally for using these photos I will definitely say “YES” but on the other hand I also know that you are always super cautious when using such content, therefore I would not suggest that you use these photos.

Also using these photos without its owner’s credentials would be immoral and unethical and in my opinion it is like you have stolen their work without their permission. So I would suggest you to use these photos only if you have their copyrights information.

reverse-image-research1I know some websites and tools which are great for reverse image search. For example “TinEye” and I am also using their application for Google chrome where you can just search the image by right clicking to that picture.

Although I will rate this tool as best among the other similar services, still results are not always great, especially when you search a complex picture having a lot of colors and variations.

Even if we find a picture’s copyright details by searching the reverse image search, you cannot credit those photos.

Why?

I did a lot of research on different stock photo websites and I know that there are more than 70% chances that a particular photo will also be available on other stock photo websites. Usually the owner/photographer of the photo sells his photo to all stock photo websites or most of the websites. So if we find the same image on 2-3 websites then how will we know that the photo we have bought belongs to which website?”

What is your opinion on this?

What will you do with 80 high resolution stock photos that you just bought for five dollars? Would you either discard the photos or ignore your investment of $5 or would you try to find a way to make a use of them.

I will love to hear your insights about it.

by: Kittycat

At the moment I build several City-Handbooks for my side job. Thats why I’m looking for cheap (Stock)photos right now!

Thanks for the advice to rather search for an alternative to Fiver. Will look into Flickr! =)

May 27, 2014 Thanks!
by: Anonymous

Thank you for the pointer to TinEye – it helped me determine that the person ‘selling’ me a graphic on Fiverr likely does not have the rights to the image he supplied me with (basically a composite of three images that TinEye was able to find for me).

May 29, 2014 Happy to help 🙂
by: Francis

Thanks for letting me know this was helpful!

In general, I would stay away from stock photo research gigs on Fiverr. At best, you receive some stock photos that are all over the net (since they are sold to many people via Fiverr). This makes your content look unoriginal, at best.

At worst, you get in trouble with the legal departments of the stock photo banks. Not worth the trouble, I believe.

There is good stuff to find on Fiverr. But there are some sections/gigs overrun with useless money-wasters.

by: Jomvie

There are lots of photo sites that have “royalty-free” ads, but in reality, you can’t use it without permission (copyright issue) if you want to use it for your site/article. In the other hand, you can, for personal use only like powerpoint.

My best Fiverr deal ever! Expanding my free Dropbox from 2 to 18 GBs for $5.

by Francis
(July 02, 2012)

my-best-fiverr-deal-ever-expanding-my-free-dropbox-from-2-to-18-gbs-for-5-21655490
Take a look at my best Fiverr Deal

You read right. You have to got to love the Dropbox service. I am using it every day – but I am not going to pay for it. The free service does more than enough for you if you only have smaller amount of files to backup and share.

But with several cooperations with virtual assistants and hundreds of sub-folders being saved into my dropbox, I was running out of space quickly.

For five dollars, I found a Gig that said that in a very legal and official way, they could expand my Dropbox to 18 Gigabytes of free storage space.

Sounds like a real bargain?

Believe me. It is!

From all the Fiverr Giggs I did up to date, it was the most effective one. If I have spent $150 dollars on Fiverr Gigs, this one Gig probably was worth it for all those Gigs together. It was very simple. I got my referral links from the Dropbox website.

dropbox-increase-you-spaceI told him my current account capacity and I looked if I could provide an .edu account to him.

If you are a student, you know what that means.

It didn’t take half a day until I got what I paid for – and even several gigabytes more.

This person over delivered.

Are you interested?

You should be.

Check out this link if you want to increase your Dropbox size. Tell the guy I said hello!

Jul 03, 2012 Fast, cheap and efficient – just how I like it
by: Francis

There are free ways to expand your Dropbox size. You can like them on social media or participate on their seasonal actions.Unfortunately, each such action will only give you 250 MB of free space. Better than nothing, especially if you just run out – but I preferred this outsourcing solution.

Since then, I have never worried about expanding my box again.

Hey, I followed your guide and went to fiverr and I even got 46 gb dropbox acc for just 10 usd. Couldnt believe it.

Feb 28, 2013 46 GB for 10$? Nice!
by: Francis

Hi and thanks for dropping a comment. I have recommended this service (or any similar service from someone with good score on Fiverr) to many friends already.Anyone should make use of expanding their Dropbox space as long as this is still possible this way!

i tried to search, but i only find this fiverr.com/dropbox_46gb

You’ll find now a list of services that expand your dropbox at the link at the end of the post.

Mar 11, 2014 Simply Amazing!
by: Anonymous

I needed to expand my Dropbox space so that I can receive much larger files. Francis’ main assistant told me to simply give him my referral link to Dropbox and so I did.A few days after, while I was online, notifications started popping out from Dropbox. It came one after another for quite a while and when it was over, my Dropbox space grew to 19 gigs from a mere 3 gigs!

It was just so amazing! Now, I don’t have to worry about being sent any kind of file no matter how huge they are because I’ll be able to accommodate them now.

So thanks a lot, Sir Francis and to his VA! 😀

To those who haven’t tried it, you better do it now!

Jun 04, 2014 High five!
by: Arya

I never thought that this kind of stuff exist…? I would like to check that out since I need a bigger storage for some of my files (I really don’t like deleting them).

Jul 09, 2014 From 2 to 66.75 GB
by: Francis jomvie-dropbox-notificaiton1

Just recently, Francis (my employer) helped me expand my Dropbox. During my rest day, I got these series of notification and had no idea why they are thanking me for referrals 😀 lol

Nevertheless, I am so happy that I will no longer worry about file storage and I will no longer need to delete files that might be of use in the future.

Can Your Virtual Assistant Take a Day Off?

by Francis
(July 01, 2012)

As a freelancer, my virtual assistant is free to work online whenever he wants and finds time. Often, he has worked over weekends, when I was taking a break from work myself.

Is this fair? Would you insist your VA takes the weekends off, as you are? Or do you assume he has other times when he can take a break?

I’m assuming that in many asian countries, like India for example, work ethics and work loads are much much higher than for example in the US.

Would it be the right thing to adapt the VA’s to the rhythm of your country? Or do you let them work at their own pace?

I started an interesting discussion about outsourcing business ethics with my virtual assistant.

Automate My Marketing With My Virtual Assistant

by Francis
(July 05, 2012)

If you have a website or a blog, then you know how much work it can be to follow up with all the

  • To Do’s
  • I should have done this
  • If I could only find the time to do XYZ.

With my virtual assistant, this all works like a wonder.

In fact, we just share the work.

Twittering?

My VA has my back.

Distributing my RSS via Email, Twitter or Tumblr?

I set it up once, then my assistant helps me get news items out regularly.

Almost effortless marketing is possible if you train your assistant once – and then use his skills to the maximum!

Some factors are more important than TALENT

by Virtual Assistant
(July 06, 2012)

Do you know there are some factors more important than your skills while working as a virtual assistant?

Have you ever considered your VA career without a

  • strong internet connection
  • reliable power backup system

No one discusses these factors while talking about a VA’s qualities, but we will definitely do!

Challenge your Virtual Assistant from time to time!

by Francis
(July 09, 2012)

Today I gave my Virtual Assistant a little challenge 🙂

He is to build one of the pages on ideal-helper without my help.

He already has done many of the steps, but this time I want to see how well he does when he has to do the SEO of a webpage.

In my opinion, it’s good to give your VA a challenging task to mix up any repetitive jobs – it sure would be more fun to me!

Doing this will teach you what sort of VA you have – and both “sorts” of VA are just as good! – because people like to work differently.

  • One likes work he can do with instructions and without much involvement
  • The other prefers challenges and learning new stuff. Provided he gets the guidance.

I think I’ll ask my VA to write a post from how he is thinking about this.

Comments for Challenge your Virtual Assistant from time to time!

Oct 13, 2014 Been there..Done that =)
by: JomvieChallenging tasks will help you determine your virtual assistant’s ability and what are the things that he/she is not comfortable to work with.

And this is by far the most effective gauge for trial and error to be more productive.

And I had been on this trying test for quite some time =)

Feb 20, 2015 You Need To Trust Before You Can Challenge Your Virtual Assistant
by: FrancisIf you try to give a newly hired assistant a very hard challenge right off the bat, you risks scaring him or her away.

In my opinion, this applies double for VAs from the Philippines. It is really important that you share the thoughts behind a challenge with your virtual assistant. If the VA knows why he is doing the task that he might, perhaps, not feel up to then the pressure is much less.

If you don’t tell him your plans beforehand, the virtual assistant risks to think, “Hey, I need to do this but I can’t do this. I will fail. I risk to get fired.”

That’s why I don’t recommend doing too many challenges too early in the working relationship. If you have been working together a few months with your VA closely and if you explained the background then, go ahead, give them challenges.

Continuing to give virtual assistants challenges helps them train their skills and not get bored with their tasks.

Increasing the Difficulties of the Challenges for my Virtual Assistant

by Francis
(July 11, 2012)

My Virtual Assistant is pretty knowledgable about SEO and web-mastering by now. By teaching him some things while outsourcing tasks to him, I believe he learnt a lot by now.

I wanted to give him another little challenge, but it ended up being pretty complicated. I won’t bore you with the details, but I want him to do some SEO for me on a future page.

Will he do a good job? I don’t know yet. Although I have a feeling that it’ll be great (no pressure! ;))

But it will be a great learning experience for both of us!

He did a great job finishing my last “Challenge” 🙂 You can see the results of his page-building right here.

Feb 20, 2015 Adapt the Challenges to the Abilities of Your Virtual Assistant
by: FrancisI have many ideas and extremely many projects that I’m running with my virtual assistants at all time. Actually, I’m working on too many projects at the same time which lowers my productivity. But split testing different approaches and challenging your virtual assistants to do different tasks has many advantages. You avoid boredom from your virtual assistants. You screen for their ability and find out which tasks they really feel comfortable with. You get more tasks done in parallel and many more.

On the other hand, following up on those challenges and really measuring and implementing the lessons learned is a skill in itself. But that’s something to worry about for the employer. The virtual assistant only has to do his best with his challenges.

Worry-free business building thanks to my Virtual Assistant

I have some non-website related stuff to take care for now.

Of course, I am still doing something for ideal-helper every day.

But it sure is calming to know that my virtual assistant has my back.

With his help, this website is growing more and more each day – faster than if I would have tried to do it myself.

We still have much stuff offline that we didn’t even publish yet. So be sure to stay tuned in 🙂

Stuck in a Train, I am Not Losing Time. I Have an Opportunity to Work Together With My Virtual Assistant

by Francis
(July 17, 2012)

Utilize your time even if you are stuck in the train

Today I was travelling to friends and I got stuck in the train. That’s something everyone can relate to.

Right?

Instead of being angered that I am losing time by doing nothing, I can quickly whip out my cell phone. Sent my VA some voicemail instructions and get some work done.

How often are you losing time waiting in line, waiting for a phone call and waiting for anything to happen?

Whenever this happens to me, I have my notepad and my cell phone ready and my virtual assistant who is faithfully waiting for my work instructions. This sort of flexibility really increases my productivity.

Working as a virtual assistant has become much easier nowadays. Internet is stuffed with some real high quality material where you can feed yourself with the best of information and processes.

Similarly becoming a virtual assistant has been easier than ever and you can teach yourself by getting information through different online posts and articles.

Others work, you sleep!

by Francis
(July 18, 2012)

I actually thought about using “others work, you sleep” as my domain name for a while. It was thought to be comical, with a true meaning deep down.

If you hire virtual assistants from the other side of the world, then your work gets done in your sleep, literally

This not only is effective, but sometimes even fun!

My VA works late at night some times, and that’s why I can see him work right when I’m at the computer, too. I prefer it that way.

A personal online assistant is the best asset a website owner could ever have.

Hiring One vs. Hiring Many Providers on oDesk

by Francis
(July 21, 2012)

As much fun as outsourcing is you have to remember that taking care of a team member is work too. If you just randomly hire dozens of people, you will soon see that emailing with everyone will take up all your time.

The optimal solution from my point of view is to hire and train one and only one permanent personal assistant. Teach him the most important things he has to know, especially tasks that are repetitive and come up again and again.

If you then have specific work needs you can hire other providers on an off-an-on basis. Hire them, have them the job get done and then release them again. Everything else is just much work and too much hassle.

As soon as your personal assistant is well trained, he will need minimal supervision. He will especially need input from you as his employer to give him tasks he has to work on.

Outsourcing is all about gaining more free time, not losing free time because you will use all the time you freed up to look after your several virtual assistant.

So don’t work hard, work smart!

Using Voice Transcription For Writing Books

by Francis
(July 29, 2012)

The biggest difficulty when writing books (or reports or even emails) is experiencing writer’s block.

By using voice transcription for writing books, your writing speed greatly increases – and your writer’s block decreases.

If you think you cannot use a virtual assistant because you don’t own an online business, this is the ONE application for outsourcing that I recommend everyone should use.

Writing text over the internet is a skill that is not optional anymore. Unless you live far away from all civilization.

So, if you ever wanted to get some good writing done, think about recording your voice.

However, when using voice transcription for writing books, you need to focus on using short sentences that read well.

You’ll be surprised how different your writing and your recorded speaking appears to the reader.

Who is outsourcing?

by Francis

If you are not involved in outsourcing yet, you may ask yourself: who are those people doing outsourcing?

  • Big corporations CEOs?
  • Famous entrepreneurs like Tim Ferris?
  • Crazy people like the author of this website?

It’s not that crazy.

Who says you have to do all chores online alone?
Why not save some time?

As a Virtual Assistant Never Fake Your Identity on oDesk

by Virtual Assistant
(June 29, 2012.)

show the real face behind your profile

© wolfgangfoto

Recently I have referred oDesk to one of my friends who is looking after an online job. Today he called me up half-heartedly and said that he wanted to change his profile photo with a beautiful girl’s photo.

First I laughed a lot at him that what he is up to and then he told me that girls usually get jobs easily. He also showed me some profiles where male freelancers are using beautiful girl’s photos and most of these girls are actually models and TV actresses.

And you know what? He was quite right. It was also shocked to see someone is using a fake profile photo to get the job and he is also getting jobs at very high rates. Obviously employers in US and Europe are not familiar with most of the Asian names and actresses.

Being an honest virtual assistant and freelance worker, I raised this matter to oDesk support and thankfully I got a pretty positive response from their side. According to oDesk support staff it’s recommended (not mandatory) to verify your identity as a provider. So if at some stage somebody reports your profile to oDesk as fake profile, oDesk will ask you to verify your identity.

You need to provide some personal information proofs such as your national identity card’s scanned copy along with any of your utility bill or your bank statement’s header. Odesk personally verifies the provided document within 3-4 business days.

Failing to verify your identity not only leads to a ban of your oDesk account, but oDesk can also block your funds forever.

So, dear all virtual assistants!

Do not try such immoral and dishonest methods to get jobs. You can be successful for the time being, but in the long run chances are high that you will get your account banned and your freelancing career can easily be ruined by your just one bad deed.

Also I request from all employers to only hire contractors which are duly verified by oDesk.

Jul 02, 2012 Interesting detail – seems that beauty sells
by: Francis

I was pretty surprised to read that this tactic is put to practice more than once. Personally I have hired more gentleman than ladies as providers on oDesk. This has nothing to do with gender.

Simply I think more male applicants have showcased their skills and had hire chances to get hired.

From the ladies I have hired, I have to admit that I did not look too much at the exterior. If a picture of a lady was too perfect, I was suspicious. I did not think of people having used the pictures of Asian actresses although it is now obvious to me.

I only thought that the picture was too far away from reality to be taken seriously.

Nevertheless no matter how you look. Try to make your profile picture friendly. Either look professional like wearing a suite and looking skillful or have a smile and look friendly.

My virtual assistant had sunglasses on and that is one of the reasons why he stood out in my point of view when I initially hired him. Now don’t go all putting on sunglasses now. But you understand what I mean.

Be yourself.

Look natural and approachable and then let your skills, portfolio and feedback do the talking.

It’s so sad that some freelancers think it’s ok to fool employers online. It gives everyone else a bad name.

But it’s great that there are still people like you who value honesty. We need more of that. Both online and offline. 😀

It’s the face factor after all! Actually, based on my experience, most employers prefer to hire girl VAs rather than boys. It’s probably because most women are organized or it’s just that the employer wants to have an inspiration everyday.

From Messy Notes To Well Organized Results

by Francis
(June 29, 2012.)

A shot from my messy work desk!

How my virtual assistant turns my rough ideas into action steps. Take a look at this photo. It’s really how I do take notes.

Looks a “little bit” messy. Doesn’t it?

Don’t worry. I’ll spare you the rest of the details of my desk. 😉
Seriously, I should take the time I freed up by outsourcing my tasks and really clean up my desk once in a while.

This is how an average day working on my website starts: I wake up full of ideas floating around my head. On a good and well organized day, I jot down some notes before I grab my cell phone and record a voicemail for my virtual assistant.

Then he is in for a very long monologue. I think the longest voicemail I recorded and sent to him was about one hour long. I don’t even know how all this time passes so quickly. It’s just that I talk all my ideas off my chest and then I rely on my virtual assistant to work through that mess.

  • Sometimes he transcribes parts of it.
  • Sometimes he transforms my jibber jabber into doable action steps.
  • Sometimes I am just asking about his feedback from his point of view and we work out a solution together.

If I would have to name one biggest weakness of mine, it would be this: I am too excited about too many thinks at once, but sometimes I don’t get anything done.

Working together with my VA has helped with that a lot and my productivity has increased. This only works of course if your virtual assistant knows you really well and knows your business really well.

Fortunately, this is the case for me. And that is why I prefer to hire one excellent person for long time rather than switching workers several times a month. By the way, I have found my virtual assistant on oDesk, if you are looking for someone to help with your work too.

Anyways, with this blog post action item # 1 from my very organized list has been done. So I will put a tick to it. 🙂

To give my virtual assistant some work to do, transcription or research, I just continue to record the same voice message until I am done with all my items.

Yep! You guessed it right.

This very blog post was also dictated via voicemail and transcribed by my virtual assistant!

It didn’t take longer than five minutes. I guess it’s shorter than most bloggers take to right one long blog post.

Isn’t it?

Sorry if I am bragging but today I am really feeling proud to have a virtual assistant at my side whom I can trust with all these tasks.

And as always I think he and myself will really be happy to read about whatever you want to add to this discussion.

Voice recordings are really great!
by: Denise

For a few weeks now, I’ve been on the receiving end of these voice recordings. And so far, they’re really great — especially when they come with screen capture videos! I can really understand what is expected of me. Also, I have realized now how emails are misunderstood most of the time while voice recordings just clear things up.They’re quite easy to work with because all I have to do is open them and Notepad and jot down what I hear. It’s like an instant to-do list! And the best part? I can listen to them repeatedly if there’s something I do not understand quite well. 😀

Voice recordings are really a must for employers who are working with virtual assistants. They really make things easier!

Example for a Full Job Description for a Content Creation Hit on Mechanical Turk

by Francis
(June 29, 2012.)

To illustrate how it is liked to post a job on the Mechanical Turk, here is an example task I have outsourced to this service.

I wanted a list of scary games for a scary games party EBook I wanted to create around Halloween. So I asked several Turkers in a HIT to write me 300 words of content about scary games.

Mechanical Turk is probably the cheapest service you can get for content creation, but it works if you use some tricks.

Check out the job description first:

Describe some really scary games for a sleepover!

Do you just love getting scaring the heck out of your friends? Do you know many, many entertaining – but scary as hell – games? Do you perhaps have a nice side story to contribute to your favorite game? Then you are the right person for this HIT!

I am looking for some creative scary games written in your own words.

Include details of how to play, for which audience it is suited, and if you need any accessories for it. The more interesting games you describe, the better!

  1. Please write at least 300 words of content. All submissions will be checked for word length.
  2. The game can be described for teens or adults. When it’s for an adult, it *really* has to be scary.
  3. In addition to the game descriptions, please provide a name (does not have to be your own) and a country/state/city (does not have to be the one you are living in) to go along with the games.

It is most important that you describe your games yourself. Do not copy some games from the internet! All content will be double checked for plagiarism. Copied content will be rejected!

***NOTE*** Only submissions that follow the above guidelines will be considered for approval.

Please provide feedback on your HIT via this textbox:

By the way, I paid about 80c per HIT for this specific task. You always need to follow through if you say that you are going to check content with Copyscape, as I did.

Note that with Copyscape each search costs you 5 cents which is an additional cost to that of the Mechanical Turk HIT.

Another lesson I learned the hard way on Mechanical Turk is that you are not allowed asking the personal info. That is why in my job description I wrote that “your name does not have to be your real one” and “the location does not have to be where you live”.

I just wanted to have some author name to go with each story, even if it wasn’t a real. In the end, I got a pretty decent collection of great scary games for an eBook with this HIT for less than $10. I am pretty sure you can come up with some useful ideas how you can use the Mechanical Turk, too.

This is actually a great idea of investing your little stuff with MTurk. But, I don’t think nor dream of going back as a HIT maker.. 😀 Honestly, you’ll be amazed how wide the variations of stuff you will see and outsource on MTurk and no matter how little the offer, they’ll just gonna get it.

Do you believe in building bridges between different people based on mutual trust and respect? Do you think doing this will allow both sides to draw the maximum from each other, and reach a win win situation? Where you win, and the other person - like a virtual assistant -also wins? If you do believe this, like I do, I think we should meet :)
